PAST PROJECTS

TRIPS TO TANZANIA

1) Susan Folstein and Martha Collins, MDs, went to Tanzania to research etiology  of autism among the children at The Autism Unit at Msimbazi School. (2001)

2) Deborah Arin, speech pathologist, went to Tanzania to assess the level of need of the current student population at the Autism Unit. She also instructed the teachers in methods of  early assessment and communication skills. (2005)

​

3) Patty Quigley, 4th year medical student, went to Tanzania on an elective working in children’s inpatient and outreach clinics at Dareda Hospital. (2005)

4) Shuei Kozu, MSW, social worker, went to Ecuador with a neurologist to do a needs assessment with children with chronic illnesses. (2006)

5) Laura Justice, Ph.D., and Deborah Arin, speech pathologist joined a team from the US to train staff and parents in Ukraine in early intervention techniques. (2007)

​

6) Andy Racine, MD, pediatrician,  went to Tanzania to do a needs assessment at Dareda Hospital. (2007)

​

7) OMPACO funded Dr. Sigalit Hoffman in a joint project with Dr. Sung of the Harvard School of Public Health. They performed a mental health needs assessment for children suffering from posstraumatic stress disorder as a result of the Civil War there.  (2008)

8) Martha Collins, M.D. and Greg McCain, RN, MS, traveled to Tanzania to provide training and consultation at the Autism Unit of the Msimbazi Mseto Primary School in Dar es Salaam.  This visit was arranged to occur during the 10th Anniversary Celebration for the founding of the Autism Unit in 1998.  (2008)

9) OMPACO funded Ella Mgalla, Head Teacher of the Autism Unit at the Msimbazi Mseto Primary School in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to come to the USA for training in new methods of education for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  She met with professionals and visited programs in New York City and in Boston, Massachusetts. (2009)
